FAQ
What is CGNT?
CGNT is an open-access web search tool developed to integrate data concerning cancer genes and normal tissues. Taking into account that the cancer experiments usually need good controls, exploring the expression of that cancer genes in normal conditions could help many studies of specific genes and/or cancer. Our purpose is to make CGNT a useful tool for researchers working in the field.
The current version of CGNT stores mRNA expression data, SNPs and indels data for each of the 386 cancer genes, involving 16 tissues. We currently do not store any data concerning cancer samples in our system.
Where can I access CGNT's website?

How can I access the data of a specific gene?
Users can search against the CGNT by typing the gene’s name or symbol at the search box provided in the home page.
What are CGNT’s criteria for defining a gene as cancer gene?
The classification of each gene was performed by an extensive and detailed literature search, using some important databases such as, NCBI gene; TAG (Tumor Associated Gene); OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man); cBioPortal; COSMIC (Catalogue of Somatic mutations in cancer) and UniProt. If the gene was related to cancer in at least one of these databases, and if the relationship gene-cancer was well described by papers on PubMed, the gene could be included in the cancer gene list.
What are CGNT’s criteria for defining a cancer gene as oncogene or tumor suppressor gene?
This classification was performed searching for each gene on specifics databases such as, NCBI gene; TAG (Tumor Associated Gene); OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man); cBioPortal; COSMIC (Catalogue of Somatic mutations in cancer) and UniProt, and searching for papers on PubMed that could prove the oncogenic or suppressive function of a gene.
Can I download the CGNT dataset?
Yes. You can download data in the download page, so you can use it freely for academic purposes. If you need data not provided in CGNT, please contact us.
Does the CGNT work on all browsers and operating systems?
We recommend the following web browsers: Google Chrome; Firefox; Safari; Internet Explorer 8 and above.
